Direct Expansion Tubular Cooler

Process Description

Product is chilled using ammonia or another refrigerant. The refrigerant level in the heat exchanger shell is controlled by adding liquid refrigerant from the refrigeration system to the lower section of the heat exchanger shell. The product flows through up to seven sections of WCB tubular multi-tube heat exchange surface where its heat is transferred to the refrigerant. The vapor released by the evaporation of the refrigerant is separated from the liquid in the upper section of the heat exchanger shell and drawn back to the refrigeration system by the compressor suction. Product temperature is controlled by adjusting the refrigerant temperature via the pressure in the heat exchanger shell.

Process System Features

  • Corrugated tubular design and direct expansion refrigeration result in high cooling efficiency.
  • Gravity refrigeration concepts deliver precise and efficient temperature control.
  • Refrigeration chamber designed for up to seven multi-tube bundles yields flexibility to meet process requirements.
  • Multiple tube bundles in one refrigeration chamber minimizes floor space requirements, reduces gasket exposure, and results in maintenance cost savings.
  • Hot gas supply system is used to rapidly defrost the unit if product freezes in the heat exchange tubes.
